Professional Service Coordinator Designation

About the PSC Program

The Professional Service Coordinator Program (PSC) is a unique online professional development opportunity specifically designed for service coordinators. It is offered through a collaboration between AASC and The Ohio State University's College of Medicine, Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology. As partners, we are dedicated to furthering the educational development and careers of service coordinators to ensure the most responsive services are provided to older adults, families and persons with disabilities residing in service-enhanced, affordable housing environments.

The PSC program is available to anyone interested in education and professional development in the field of service coordination. The program consists of 12 core modules on the topics of communication, diversity, motivational interviewing, and more.

All modules are web-based, allowing participants to complete the training from anywhere at any time.

Through the PSC program, you have the option of completing the full program requirements to earn the designation of Professional Service Coordinator, or you can complete individual modules to earn training contact hours.

Above: Service Coordinators who completed the Professional Service Coordinator Program designation and passed the exam were honored at a special conferment ceremony at the 2024 National Service Coordinator Conference.

Designation Requirements

To earn the Professional Service Coordinator designation, individuals must:

  • Step One: Complete the six-part Service Coordinator Foundations series before registering for the PSC modules. This training is a pre-requisite to the PSC program.
  • Step Two: Complete the 12 core PSC Modules within two years of the registration date in the PSC Program.
  • Step Three: Sit for the Comprehensive Exam within one year after completing the last required module.

Prior to taking the exam, candidates must:

  • Provide proof of a minimum of two years of experience as a service coordinator; or two years equivalent work in social services or a related health care field on behalf of older adults and/or families; or two years property management experience with responsibility for assisting residents with service acquisition; or in any field with supervisory and/or customer service experience. Candidates must submit a resume and documentation of qualifying experience.
  • Exam candidates who hold an Associate's, Bachelor’s or other advanced degree in service coordination or a related healthcare field may count that degree as two years of employment and may sit for the Comprehensive Exam after providing proof of their degree (transcript, copy of diploma, letter from institution). Note: Participants must still take the 12 core PSC Modules and the pre-requisite Service Coordinator Foundations series.
  • Pay the Comprehensive Exam Fee

In order to maintain the PSC designation, you must meet the renewal criteria every three years. Effective January 1, 2023, all PSC continuing education required for renewal must come from either AASC or The Ohio State University's College of Medicine, Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology. No other training courses will be accepted for renewal of your PSC designation.

PSC Renewal

Once the PSC designation is achieved, AASC requires all PSCs to participate in the renewal program in order to maintain the PSC designation. This ensures that PSCs maintain the highest professional standards and continue to receive additional training through continuing education. PSCs must meet the requirements below and submit evidence of professional development activities every three years in order to maintain the PSC designation.

Renewal Guidelines

PSCs need to submit renewal documentation by the end of the third year following the passage of the PSC exam. For example, if an individual successfully completed the PSC exam in 2023, s/he must submit their renewal application no later than 12/31/2026. In this example, only contact hours from 1/1/2024 through 12/31/2026 will be considered. The renewal application can be submitted during the third year once the renewal fee is paid and the requirements are met. Submittal of the renewal application will be accepted October to March once the below requirements are met.

To renew the PSC designation, AASC requires all PSC holders to:

  • Pay the renewal fee
  • Obtain 36 training contact hours including a minimum of three total hours of ethics training every three years
  • AASC approved courses are AASC webinars, AACU on-demand courses and courses offered at AASC conferences. OSU approved courses are SAGE, SUNSET and Topics in Gerontology.
  • Contact hours need to be earned at the official training programs with established learning objectives outlined above (4 discounted or complimentary AASC courses can be accepted per year; 12 for the renewal cycle)
  • Ethics requirement - must have the word “ethics” or "ethical" in the course title to be accepted
  • Submit proof of course attendance/completion

The following course scenarios will not count towards the 36-hour renewal total:

  • Duplicate courses with the same course title within the three-year period
  • Courses that are less than one hour in length
  • Courses without certificates (no flyers, promos, emails, screenshots, or anything of the like will be accepted)
  • Courses with certificates not listing the training contact hour or CEU hour totals (schedules and start/stop times do not count as total listed hours)
  • Course topics that are not in line with the HUD training requirements

Renewal Late Fee Schedule

Not meeting the requirements of the PSC Renewal Program results in an expiration of the PSC designation. However, reinstatement may be requested, with documentation of 36 training contact hours (including three hours of ethics training) submitted.

The Renewal Application can be submitted after the date due, but additional fees apply as follows:

PSC Renewal Late Fee 0-6 monhts    $25 Members; $50 Non-Members
PSC Renewal Late Fee 7-12 months    $50 Members; $100 Non-Members
PSC Renewal Late Fee 13-18 months    $75 Members; $150 Non-Members
PSC Renewal Late Fee 19-24 months    $100 Members; $200 Non-Members

If more than 19 months have passed since renewal, the AASC Professional Development Advisory Committee will determine what steps the expired PSC needs to take in order to get reinstated and become current. Please contact AASC for information.

PSCs who do not meet or follow the renewal guidelines will NOT be designation holders and the program is then considered a certificate program only. As such, you will not be permitted to present as a PSC and cannot use the letters of the designation behind your name (i.e. Jane Doe, PSC) on business cards, email signatures, LinkedIn, resumes, etc., or receive PSC designee discounts and benefits.
