In our society today there is a large population that has been affected by trauma. Those who work in behavioral health services or as a service provider of residents in affordable housing need to understand how to approach this population using a trauma informed perspective. In order to do that, we must understand trauma, its implications, and learn ways to approach people who have been affected by it. Understanding how trauma and in particular Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) can affect those to whom we provide supportive services can assist in enhancing client engagement, increase safety for all and avoid staff burnout and turnover. This workshop will provide an overview of trauma across the lifespan, discuss its impact, explain what it takes to be “trauma informed”, provide some helpful tools in working with those experiencing trauma and review some proven models of TIC. Participants should expect a sound introduction to TIC while learning how to be better prepared to offer TIC and improve the quality of services to the population we serve. About the Presenters
Bruce Kuban is the Regional Director of Support Service programs with LifeSTEPS. Bruce has the primary responsibility of providing clinical supervision, contract compliance and oversight to several special projects contracted by LifeSTEPS to provide direct services to residents living in affordable permanent housing, including formerly chronically homeless now residing in permanent supportive housing. He has his Master’s Degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from Sacramento State University and over 30 years of experience working in social services. While now working in administration, Bruce admits to always having a soft spot in his heart for direct services and face-to-face contact with clients, including those difficult clients. In fact, working with difficult clients has brought him his greatest rewards throughout his career
Gabe Ferreira is the Community & Resident Services Training Manager for LifeSTEPS and is responsible for implementing program strategies and fostering a shared meaning and commitment through virtual collaborations. Gabe has over 6 years of experience working in various capacities for the most vulnerable and underserved populations, including grass-roots campaigns working to improve the health and reduce the income inequality of Californians through advocacy, education, and outreach. He has provided service coordination for youth, families, and older adults at several affordable housing communities facilitating classes, activities, food donations and assessing resident’s needs. Gabe received his master’s degree in Public Administration from Wichita State University and has a passion for helping people understand what their choices are in ways that respect their dignity and rights.
