*Recorded Version* Successful coordination of services for at-risk populations across social systems depends on being able to engage people of diverse backgrounds in self-management of their care. Engagement is not possible without effective communication. In this presentation we address how language and cultural barriers along with literacy challenges affect the vulnerable population’s service coordinators work with daily. The presentation focuses on communication skills that can be learned and practiced to achieve better outcomes.
Who Should Attend: Advanced Social Services, service coordinator (family/elderly)
1. Understand the three parts of the “triple threat” and how the combination of these barriers to good communication affect positive outcomes for at-risk populations.
2. Understand the scope to the communication challenges certain population’s experience. Many of our human service systems are too complex for a person of low literacy to navigate. Language and cultural barriers only make things harder.
3. Participants will learn key communication skills to practice intentionally until their use becomes more automatic.
About the Presenter
Marcia Carteret M. Ed. joined the faculty of the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine in 2009 and has spent nearly a decade demonstrating excellence as an educator in planning, developing, organizing, and implementing healthcare communication learning programs and activities that address patient culture, language, and health literacy barriers. Recent immigrants and refugees in Colorado are a population of special interest due to their increased risk of poor health outcomes caused in part by cultural and linguistic barriers to care.
